The reasons cited against gay marriage are quite similar to those against giving women the right to vote, or having blacks in the armed forces. Doesn’t that sound ridiculous?
After all, women do have the vote and have even served as prime ministers or presidents in several countries, and blacks have climbed to the highest ranks in the armed forces.
The main reason often cited is that gay men and lesbians are not fit to get married. Just as women were not thought fit to vote.
But if homosexuals are prepared to remain faithful within a legalized union, how can they NOT be fit for marriage? About 50% of heterosexual marriages end in divorce, often owing to adultery by one of the partners. Is that a reason to prohibit such marriages?
Today, many couples decide not to marry yet stay together and have children like any other family. Although there may be some legal complications in such common-law arrangements, if the relationship is successful they can usually be overcome.
In fact, same-sex marriages represent no threat at all to conventional marriages. They merely expand the definition of marriage.
